Did you know that when a periwinkle snail dies, the leftover shell can become a home for a Hermit Crab!

Movement

Periwinkles are one of the slowest moving snails in the world. Their average speed is about 1-2 metres per hour! And if they are in a real hurry, they can only move as fast as 5 metres in one hour!

Surviving the heat

When a Periwinkle is on a rock exposed to the sun on a hot summer day, it can get overheated.

To avoid this, when the Periwinkle is getting to hot, it will let itself roll down the slope and land into the water!

Upside-down 

Did you know that if a Periwinkle accidentally lands upside-down, it is unable to turn back to face the rock!

If the snails are not washed back over by the sea or turned over by a hand, it will remain upside down, unable to feed. This will result in death.
